Class D – DZ Driver Training

A DZ license in Ontario permits you to drive a medium to the heavy truck, from dump trucks, cement trucks, garbage trucks and fire trucks where the towed trailer does not exceed 4600 kg. Here’s an overview of the DZ license course:

What is a DZ License?

  1. DZ License: Allows drivers to operate trucks with a gross weight towing capacity of more than 11,000 kg and vehicles with air brakes, but only if the trailer total weight is below 4,600 kg.
  2. Needed for construction companies, garbage disposal services, and many cities or municipal corporations.

Eligibility

  • Age: At least 18 years of age.
  • License: Needs to have a valid Ontario G license (or higher).
  • Medical Requirements: Undergo a medical examination for the purpose of ascertaining fitness to drive a commercial vehicle.
  • Knowledge Test: The candidate must complete a written exam on commercial drive dynamics and air brakes.
  • Z endorsement: The candidate should complete airbrakes course then do “Z” endorsement it means your License will be GZ

    DZ Course Components

      1. Classroom Training:
        • The fundamental of operating heavy vehicles.
        • Ontario traffic laws or laws relating to traffic in Ontario.
        • The general measures of safety & defensive driving measures.
        • Hours of Service (HOS) and logbook training.
        • Service inspections before the trip – vehicle checks.
      1. Practical Training:
        • In this type, driver’s receive practical practice in real life situations.
        • Road assets such as position control and lane control and smooth stopping.
        • Specific handling procedures, such as loading and unloading.
        • Air brake systems (prerequisite for Z endorsement) must be practiced.
      1. Air Brake (Z) Endorsement:
        • Training to operate vehicles equipped with air brakes.
        • Includes both theoretical and practical components.
    1. Road Test Preparation:
      • Specific training for MTO road test success.
      • Driving license exam practical tests.

    Duration

    • Course Length: Usually, it takes 1 to 3 weeks but can be shortened or lengthened due to the choice of full or part-time study.

    Funding Options

    • Second Career Program: A public program aimed at providing the unemployed with an opportunity to gain a new occupation.
    • Employer Sponsorship: Some of the companies provide courses to the aspirants before they join service.
    • Student Loans: They can be obtained either from the offices of ‘Financial Institutions’ or from ‘Training Schools.

    A DZ license qualifies you for roles such as:

    • Dump Truck Driver: Transportation for construction and roadwork projects.
    • Garbage Truck Driver: Waste collection services.
    • Cement Truck Operator: Distribution of concrete for construction sites.
    • Delivery Driver: Personal and business couriers and delivery services that operate within a city or a country.

    Frequently Asked Questions

    The Class D license lets you drive A truck with a gross weight or registered gross weight exceeding 11,000 kilograms (24,000 lb) or any truck or combination exceeding 11,000 kilograms (24,000 lb) gross weight or registered gross weight provided the towed vehicle is not over 4,600 kilograms (10,000 lb). If the towed vehicle weighs more, you will need either a full Class A or restricted Class A license.

    With a Class D license, you can also drive a car or light truck covered by a G Class license.

    Further to course completion students will be awarded the following:

    • DZ Commercial Driver Training Certificate from the training program.
    • Class DZ License from the Ontario Ministry of Transportation.
    • WHMIS, PDIC, and Dangerous Goods Certification.
    • Valid Ontario Class ‘G’ License or higher
    • Grade 10 English or Equivalent
    • Successfully Pass Class “D” Written Exam
    • Successfully pass the Air Brake “Z” training
    • Minimum 18 years of age
