Air brakes training is required to operate vehicles that are fitted with air brake system and need a Z endorsement on your drivers license in Ontario. Here’s a detailed overview of the Air Brake Training Course:

 

What is Air Brakes (Z Endorsement)?

  • The Z Endorsement lets you drive vehicles equipped with air brakes like the ones listed below.

       Commercial vehicles, buses and some fire tenders.

  • Required for those who want to obtain the DZ or AZ driving licence.

Eligibility

  • Minimum Requirements: Ontario Class G or any higher class driver’s license.
  • Medical Exam: Not mandatory for Z Endorsement training but is mandatory for any full commercial license like DZ or AZ.

    Course Components

    Air brake training includes both classroom instruction and hands-on practice.
    1. Classroom Training:
    • Basics of Air Brakes: Learning about air brake systems and their elements (compressors, tanks, valves, chambers).
    • System Mechanics: An analysis of the ability of air brakes to produce and sustain braking force.
    • Safety and Maintenance: Methods of identifying and correcting leakage or fault.
    • Air Brake Regulations: Availability of large steel out of gauge trailers for compliance with the ministry of transportation of Ontario (MTO).
     
    1. Practical Training:
    • Pre-trip Inspections: Carrying out brake test in order to maintain the security of the system.
    • System Adjustments: Knowing and learning how to adjust manual slack adjusters and knowing the basic about automatic one.
    • Hands-On Brake Operation: Training on vehicles fitted with air brake systems.
     
    1. Knowledge and Skills Test Preparation:
    • Preparation and common approaches to taking the written knowledge test.
    • Pre-assessment and practical air brake demonstration for licensing.

    Duration

    • Course Length: Usually, it takes about 8-12 hours to finish, and can be done in one or two days.
    • weekend classes are often available.

     

    Testing

      1. Written Test:
        • The Ontario Provincial Police is part of the Ministry of Transportation (MTO).
        • Teaches about theoretical aspects of air brake systems and legal requirements.

     

    1. Practical Test:
      • Covers the pre-trip inspection demonstration and the operational air brake test.

     

    Funding Options

    • Employer Sponsorship: Employers such as the trucking and construction industry may provide for sponsorship of training.
